Tipos de Arame / Wire Types

Há tempos escrevi um post acerca do diâmetro do arame. Para complementar esse post aqui ficam algumas informações acerca dos diferentes tipos de arame disponíveis. Infelizmente existem muitas opções que ainda não consegui encontrar em Portugal, onde a escolha de arames é bastante limitada. 

Ainda não desisti de encontrar o que preciso cá. Há que apoiar as nossas empresas e a nossa economia, mesmo que elas "simplesmente" importem o arame!

Fabrica-se arame de diversos materiais, como ouro, prata, cobre, aço ou alumínio, também se podem encontrar arame banhado a ouro ou prata, e a escolha do material de que é feito o arame depende unicamente do gosto ou da carteira de cada um!

O arame vendido em Portugal não traz indicação de dureza, ou seja, não é possível saber de antemão se vai ser fácil de trabalhar ou não. No entanto, lá fora o arame é dividido em níveis de dureza: duro (full hard), médio ou "meio-duro" (half hard) e macio (dead soft). 

O arame duro é o mais resistente e mais dificil de trabalhar, por isso requer mais o uso de ferramentas e é utilizado para pulseiras e para peças grandes ou pesadas. O arame médio é o mais utilizado pela sua versatilidade, é mais fácil de manipular e se for necessário pode ser endurecido para manter a forma mais facilmente. O arame macio é o mais fácil de manipular (consegue fazer-se facilmente só com os dedos) e é o mais indicado para o wire wrapping, no entanto é preciso ter cuidado porque fica marcado com facilidade.

Mais uma vez, em Portugal não é fácil (eu ainda não consegui) encontrar os diversos formatos de arame que existem lá fora. Eles têm, para além do mais comum arame redondo, arame quadrado, e arame meia-cana! É incrível a diferença que esta simples alteração do formato do arame pode fazer no resultado final de uma peça! Além disso, torna muito mais fácil o trabalho do artista, eu que o diga que faço todas as peças com arame redondo, que escorrega um no outro e não fica quieto, como ficaria, por exemplo, o arame quadrado!

O arame quadrado utiliza-se sobretudo para o wire wrapping, para fazer a moldura que envolve a conta, peça ou cabochão e o arame meia-cana é o que une o arame quadrado. Na minha opinião, estes dois tipos de arame são uma evolução do arame redondo porque facilitam em muito o trabalho do artista.

I haven't given up finding what I need here yet. I believe in supporting our companies and our economy, even if they "just" import the wire!

Wire is made of several materials like gold, silver, copper, steel or aluminum, it's also easy to find gold plated and silver plated wire, and the choice of wire depends solely on each one's liking or purse!

The wire sold in Portugal comes without a label for hardness, meaning that we cannot know beforehand if it'll be hard to work with or not. However, abroad the wire comes in three different degrees of hardness: hard or full hard (it's the same thing), half hard and dead soft. 

Hard wire is the most robust and harder to work with, so we need to use the tools more often, and it's appropriate for bangles, bracelets and heavier pieces. The half hard wire is the most popular because it's quite versatile, it's easier to manipulate and, if we need to we can work harden it in order to better keep it's shape. The dead soft wire is the easiest to manipulate (we can work mostly with our fingers) and it's the best for wire wrapping, however we need to be very careful because it kinks and gets tool marks easily.

Again, it's not easy in Portugal to find the several wire shapes there is (I haven't found them yet). Beyond the common round wire, there's also quare wire and half-round wire! You wouldn't believe the difference this simple change in the wire shape can make to the look of the final piece! Besides, it really makes life so much easier for the wire artist, I should know since I make all my pieces with round wire, that never stays where we want it and slides off each other, unlike the square wire, for instance!

The square wire is perfect for wire wrapping, especially to wrap the bead or cab, and the half round wire is the one that binds the square wire together. I think these two types of wire are like the round wire evolved, because the make the artist's work so much easier.
