Dreamcatcher

A semana passada  ele acordou perto da meia-noite e chamou-me.
No Sábado passado dei-lho e contei-lhe a lenda do primeiro Dream Catcher.

For those of you who are unaware of this, I have a beautiful son, aged six, who's very bright and usually sleeps like an angel. Last week he woke up around midnight and called for me. He had a bad dream. Usually, I can solve this using a trick that I learned from my husband: We just need to turn the pillow to the nice dreams side! Sometimes, when my little boy shows signs of disbelief I take the pillow, shake it up real good, smackit a couple of times to cast out the bad dreams. Then I hug the pillow and tell him I'm filling it with nice dreams that spring from  his mother's love.
On the next day I received a newsletter from a supplier featuring an article about Dream Catchers. They say there's no such thing as coincidences... I decided immediately that I'd make a Dream Catcher for my boy. Last Saturday I gave it to him and told him the tale of the first Dream Catcher.
"The most prevalent dream catcher legend tells of a shaman suffering from nightmarish dreams that began to plague his health. In an effort to heal himself, he hung a medicine wheel above his head where he slept hoping it would relieve him. After many days of no relief, a benevolent Grandmother Spider and a wise Grandfather Owl, seeing the medicine wheel hanging there above the shaman, devised a plan to trap the nightmare dreams that were making him ill. Grandmother Spider toiled, using her silk to spin an intricate web within the wheel, leaving a small hole in the very center. Then, Grandfather Owl flew by and dropped a large feather. The feather floated down and gently landed at center of the web, catching beside the tiny center hole.
As the shaman slept that first night, the nightmare dreams that came again to inflict him were ensnared in Grandmother Spider's webbing. They struggled and thrashed to escape in vain, becoming hopelessly entangled in the web, yet the peaceful dreams were easily able to find their way through the small center hole and floated down the feather to the sleeping shaman. When the sun rose that next morning, the nightmare dreams evaporated away like dew. The shaman awoke from a restful sleep feeling surprisingly at peace and well. When he stretched a big morning stretch, he glanced up and was astonished to see the medicine wheel he had hung above him transformed into a dream catcher by Grandmother Spider and Grandfather Owl. Saying a word of appreciation for the healing he knew he had received, he shared wisdom of the dream catcher with his people. The dream catcher has ever been used from that day to filter dreams and protect those who slumber from menace." (Source)
My little boy loved the story and the next morning, he told me, proudly, that his Dream Catcher really works!

O Dia do Vidro Marinho * The Sea Glass Day

LOL

Beijos,
Cris

This was a hot weekend. I missed the warm weather on weekends! Since Spring begun we've had beautiful warm days during weekdays and bad weather on weekends! It is an injustice! Moving forward!...
In my home my son and my husband always wake up before I do... I'm the sleepyhead!
This Saturday, my husband woke me up lovingly, telling me he had just made my breakfast and it was just waiting for me, because it was a beautiful hot morning, perfect to go to the beach.
Before long we left home towards the beach. Those of you who follow DeCris Creations on Facebook could see that I was posting the invite at 08:29...
It was an outstanding morning! When we got to the beach there were very few people on the sand and we walked to our favorite spot, after all the coffee shops and restaurants. Then we walked a bit further because I wanted to be next to a bunch of stones and pebbles the sea had brought to the sand and we settled in, put our towels in the sand and took the necessary sun-protecting precautions. Here begins my fun!
Since I discovered Sea Glass, going to the beach has never been the same! I used to like to lay in the sun, or sit enjoying the view and observing the behavior - sometimes quite odd - of the people around... Now, from the second I arrive at the beach to the moment my foot leaves the sand all I can look at is the sand, I only look down... It's stronger than me! I got the Sea Glass hunting bug! Last Saturday morning I didn't even sit in my towel! One look at the pebbles was enough to find the first piece of Sea Glass, then another, and another...
Me, my husband and my son spent three hours at the beach. In these three hours I only stopped beachcombing for these beautiful Mermaids Tears twice, and just to take some quick plunges in the ocean to cool off! Among the three of us, we found more Sea Glass than in weeks of beachcombing. The ocean was generous, the Glass is gorgeous, and we found large and small pieces in various shades of green and brown, whites, aqua and even blue!
I'm so happy with Saturday's finds!!!
Sunday was picture taking day. Yesterday was the day I edited the photos and started writing. Today is sharing day:

Everything we gathered in just three hours!

Artistic display. Notice the bottle top pieces in white and brown...

This picture really shows the different shades of blue and green.
In the background, a white piece, cracked but... Gorgeous!

Collection of whites.

Collection of browns... Surprisingly few!

Collection of greens... Lots of them, as usual!
This doesn't necessarily mean that there are more green than other colors, like white and brown, just that they're a lot easier to spot!

The day's treasure, complete, each color in its seashell, like precious pearls!

Whites and aquas. Some of the aqua are so pale that one can only tell they're blue when comparing them with the white ones!
The whites on the right look greyish because of the shadow.

Several shades of greens and browns.

Stairway to Sea Glass heaven!
LOL

The crown jewel!
My very first blue, really blue, piece!

This photo really shows the difference between the "crown jewel" blue and the other aqua blues!

I dream of finding other blues, maybe a marble or two, properly frosted by the ocean. Red and oranges are also on the dream list!

I hope you enjoyed this post, I felt great pleasure in sharing with you my passion for Sea Glass, and hopefully, soon, I will also share a few jewelry pieces made from this Glass!

Kisses,
Cris

Prometido é devido! / As promissed

Beijos,
Cris

A promise made is a promise to be kept and I promised to show you which of the amethyst prototypes made it to final piece.
This is another custom order: A necklace made entirely of aquamarine briolettes was taken apart to make other pieces, with a more modern look, and a bit cleaner and simple. This was the necklace:
On this photo the necklace appears to be made od graduated briolettes, but that is just an effect of how the picture was taken. They're all the same size.  Aquamarine is amongst my favorite gems, and these are exceptionally pure and beautiful! They're gorgeous and I only wish that the pieces that I make enhance them!
Some of these magnificent aquamarine briolettes, put together with sterling silver and pure silver wire, gave birth to:
These earrings...
And the matching pendant.

And these two other pairs of earrings, fashioned with a simpler design.

What do you think, was it worth the waiting? I just didn't publish these before because I was waiting for a good picture taking day, with nice natural light so that the photos are clear and the colors are as close to reality as possible.

Kisses,
Cris

Obvious to you. Amazing to others, by Derek Sivers

Tenho-me sentido assim. Eu sinto-me assim! E sinto-me assim muitas vezes!
Tenho-me sentido bloqueada, presa, criativamente.
Tenho-me sentido desmotivada e ao olhar para o meu trabalho parece-me óbvio e pouco surpreendente.

I've felt like this. I do feel like this! And I feel like this a lot!
I have been feeling stuck in a rut, creatively speaking.
I have been feeling unmotivated and I look at my work and feel no amazement.
I forgot how much I've worked, how far I've got and how hard and fun the journey has been.

I must try to remember it all again, and maybe I'll be able to finish the pieces that have been on my work table for months!
I've been feeling guilty about it.
I will take a step back and try to regain some of that amazement again.

Encomendas e Aniversários... / Custom Orders and Birthdays...

UAU!

Vamos a ver...

Algumas chegaram a peças finais!

Beijos,
Cris

WOW! Time does fly when we're busy!
On my last post I showed you some works in progress, a few prototypes and others that were still in its drawing stage. Of those, there are some that still haven't come out of the drawing stage, other that did come out just to be put aside and other that reached the top and are now final pieces!
Meanwhile, I have been drawing some more ideas I plan to make in wire soon, if life permits.
Since my last post, I've had my mother-in-law's birthday, my son's Easter vacations, some beautiful days at the beach followed by many rainy days, Easter itself, and a lot, really a lot of work on my "day-job". Some other events in my life have been giving me despondency and uninspiring times that have been making it hard to make more pieces, but I'm a natural optimist and I know it will end.

I'm not sure where to start showing you all I should have posted in these days of blog silence... Let's see...
On my last post I started by showing you the work in progress of a prototype of a mother-of-pearl and wire filigree pendant. This mother-of-pearl piece used to be an earring, quite beautiful and very simple: A mother-of-pearl rectangle, slightly concave - denouncing its natural origin - with a little hole on top where it hanged on the earwire. It turns out that this earring was abandoned by its pair and its owner asked me to give it a new life and a new spirit.
This is one of the prototypes that made it to final piece, made with 22 gauge silver wire and 29 gauge pure silver wire, and I must say I'm very happy and very proud of the end result.
As soon as I held this mother-of-pearl piece in my hands I thought it would look wonderful with some silver wire filigree work, and despite never having done it before, I decided to give it a go. Of course, I had to make a prototype, so that I could find and overcome every obstacle that might show up, and I so glad I did it because the final piece came out even better and more beautiful that it's prototype!

Making prototypes is hard work and it takes a lot of time, especially in highly detailed pieces or that require a very meticulous work, but it's well worth it! The best piece of advice I ever got, and the best I can give to those who want to start working with wire is: "Practice, practice, practice!" And by practicing by doing prototypes it becomes very clear that it really works!

I've been working on prototypes for the moon sketches but I have nothing to show yet... The moon is playing hard to get... Or they're getting me moony! lol

Meanwhile, I had to interrupt my work on the prototypes to create a birthday present for my dear mother-in-law.
After considering the DeCris pieces she already owns and the jewelry she tends to wear, I decided to make her a bracelet, and following a tutorial by Nancy Wickman, I made this red agate and pure copper bangle, wire woven, patinaed and polished to get this gorgeous result.
This piece also gave me the opportunity to try something new, that I had never done before, and it was to patina copper. It's an amazing process and who'd have said all it takes is a boiled egg and some time to bring this wonderful transformation to the metal!
Three or four night's work, lots of love and dedication was all I needed to be able to give as a birthday present a piece especially created for a special lady!

Remember those amethyst prototypes from the previous post? Soon, I promise, I will post a follow up on those pieces. Some of them made it to final pieces!
Now, don't be shy and leave a comment, share your thoughts! ;)

Kisses,
Cris
